To sell or not to sell that is the question Empty To sell or not to sell that is the question

Post by SeikoJohn Sat Mar 04 2017, 16:00

I have been into Horology (I love using the posh word for watch hoarder ) for just short of 2 years now and I started off like many I guess buying watches that appealed to me and then decided that I just wanted to own Automatic watches as Quartz and mechanical didnt interest me .
I then moved on to just buying Seiko Autos until one day a Pulsar Quartz arrived in the post from Domecurb and I thought hey I quite like this I do not need to change the date if I have not wore it for a while and I do not need to set the time so this is where my love of quartz started .

I still only try to collect the Seiko brand although this does open the doors to Pulsar Lorus Alba etc

I can tell you where each one in my collection came from and what appealed to me to make me buy it. My knowledge in movements and cases has increased dramatically thanks to here and other forums and as most on here know I "tinker" now and again cleaning up a watch replacing crystals I have tried to make the odd leather strap and feel my work is getting better slowly .

I have reached a point though that I guess a few on here will have experienced do I keep my collection as it is or do I sell some of them and if I do which ones do I sell as i like each and everyone in their own little way and some more than others .

If I sell some what would I replace them with and in the future would I regret selling. Something I need to think long and hard about .

Here is the majority of my collection to date I do have others but they are tucked way in another box these are the ones I mainly wear day to day

To sell or not to sell that is the question D772337C-0BDD-4014-9890-6A774C8FFCB9_zpsuapscjwq

Possibly the place to start is to identify watches that you would definitely want in your collection. You could then decide which ones that you would be happy to part with to help fund the new ones. The old one in one out rule can be good & keeps the collection at a sensible level though part of the fun is buying watches you like rather than need. Very Happy

If you find some of your watches are getting progressively less wrist time they could be ear marked for sale or trade. I think though before parting with anything it's worth considering how easy / difficult it would be to replace them if you wanted to in the future.

All that said I'm not really the best person to give advice as I haven't sold any of my watches over the years. Embarassed

My only advise if you sell any are what would you replace them with also think about it wait a month have another think and then if you feel the same ones are needing new homes then off they go to new parsture

I think you are both correct I need to narrow down my collection of keepers and the ones for pastures new . I have definate keepers and some that should go but its the ones that are left in grey area I like them but am not wearing them as often. Agree though about taking time out before I rush in and regret it .

The Grey ones look again and then again and see a least one that you could part with or think of a Seiko you would like and see what ones you would be happy to part with to justify a possible incoming

I have to admit over the years I have had some major dilemmas with the collection but that's part of the watch roller coaster ride we all take part in

I do have plans to alter the appearance of the monster I bought from you Andy if all goes to the plan in my head it should be a different yet good looking monster. I also have an expensive (to me) watch coming in a week or two not a seiko but does have a seiko movement and is based on a early Seiko model .
Going to think over my plans and will let you all know if I decide to part with some or not
