New one in the Seiko el-370

The glass is quite scuffed but more worryingly it wasn't working.

A gentle shake wouldn't advance the second hand which was confusing as albeit powered by a battery it still uses a balance wheel.

After a struggle getting the case back off found a rubber gasket neatly coiled above the balance.

Once this was removed and after a few gentle taps the watch started working.

The 3703B movement is an electronically controlled balance motor from circa 1971. I wouldn't manage to clearly describe how the technology works but found this diagram which gives an idea.

The only part of the mechanism that isn't working as it should is the quick date set which should be achieved by pushing the crown in repeatedly until the correct date is reached.  That said the day / date do advance each 24 hours so with some "toggling" it could be achieved. I'm too wary of causing any damage so will leave well alone for now.

All that was left was to tackle the scratched Perspex with Brasso to remove the scratches........

I was quite chuffed John though it was a simple enough fix. It was still a great feeling though when the balance wheel came back to life.

Very nice. I like these inbetweeny watches. I don't have any of the EL series (yet), but have 3 Elnixes (Elnixi ?), 3 Cosmotrons, a Hamilton and a Rotary.
